Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi

Just one hour from downtown Abu Dhabi, in the middle of the desert, stands Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi, blending Bedouin culture with Mashrabiya architectural style

Rough Desert Architecture: Al Wathba, a Square of Stone Rising from the Sand

Leaving the city behind, the skyline of Abu Dhabi’s skyscrapers fades into the rearview mirror as the road cuts through miles of open desert. After about an hour’s drive, Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, emerges like a mirage — a geometric cluster of stone structures glowing under the desert sun.

Passing through the entrance gate and into the central lobby, visitors are enveloped by the atmosphere of an authentic oasis, where traditional Emirati aesthetics meet modern comfort.

Al Wathba Resort & Spa: Recreating the Spirit of a Traditional Arabian Village

Part of the Marriott Luxury Collection, Al Wathba Resort & Spa evokes the intimacy of an ancient desert settlement. Its design centers around one unifying material — rough, beige-colored stone — shaping everything from the 103 guest rooms and private villas to the fountains, planters, arches, and winding paths that connect the resort’s courtyards.

The modern suites and villas offer complete privacy, featuring shaded patios with private pools and jacuzzis. A short sandy path leads to a pergola furnished with soft couches and Bedouin-style rugs. As night falls, the star-filled desert sky becomes a breathtaking canopy overhead.

The Beauty and Function of Mashrabiya: Traditional Arabian Architecture at Al Wathba

Interwoven with the stone structures are decorative wooden elements, handcrafted vases, and carved wall niches — all highlighting the mashrabiya, the hallmark of traditional Arabic architecture.

The mashrabiya is a wooden lattice screen designed to promote natural ventilation and privacy while providing shade from the desert sun. Typically placed between balconies or windows, its intricate geometric or floral patterns create a play of light and shadow, cooling interiors naturally.

The term mashrabiya likely derives from the Arabic root Š-R-B (shariba, “to drink”), referencing rooms where people gathered to enjoy tea. This interpretation, supported by the architect Hassan Fathy, connects the feature to social life and domestic rituals.

The Heart of Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa: Pool, Restaurants, and Desert Views

At the heart of the resort lies a large central pool framed by palm trees and shaded cabanas. As the desert wind stirs the linen curtains and the sun sets behind the dunes, the sky turns pink and violet — reflected like watercolor on the surface of the water.

From the pool bar and restaurant terrace, guests can savor the moment, surrounded by stillness and desert air.

The resort features six restaurants and lounges, offering cuisines from across the region — Levantine, Moroccan, and traditional Emirati — as well as international flavors. The Terra Secca restaurant brings an elegant Italian touch, with interiors inspired by Mediterranean warmth and a terrace that opens onto the tranquil desert landscape.

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve: Abu Dhabi’s First Legally Protected Nature Sanctuary

Just beyond the village lies the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, a unique ecological haven established in 1998 and listed on the IUCN Green List of Protected Areas in 2018 — the first in the region to receive this recognition.

Once a salt-flat sabkha, the reserve now features a network of natural and man-made lakes that sustain a thriving ecosystem. It is home to more than 250 bird species, 37 types of plants, and abundant aquatic life.

Its most famous residents are the greater flamingos, whose seasonal population can reach 4,000 individuals during spring and autumn, transforming the reserve into a living pink spectacle.

The Al Wathba Fossil Dunes: A Four-Million-Year-Old Desert Landscape

About 45 kilometers east of Abu Dhabi lies the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes, a protected area showcasing over 1,700 fossilized sand formations spread across 7 square kilometers — one of the densest fossil dune sites in the UAE.

These geological wonders, estimated to be over four million years old, can be explored along scenic trails with shaded rest areas. The site offers a rare glimpse into the ancient natural history of the Arabian Peninsula, shaped by wind and time.

Camel Racing in Al Wathba: Celebrating UAE’s Timeless Desert Heritage

Experiencing the desert also means embracing its traditions. At Al Wathba Resort & Spa, guests can participate in camel riding excursions, an homage to the Bedouin way of life.

Camels have long been treasured by Emiratis as loyal companions and vital means of transportation. Over time, camel racing evolved from a festive pastime into one of the region’s most prestigious and lucrative sports, with championship prizes reaching up to one million dollars.

The Al Wathba Camel Racetrack, located just 15 kilometers from the resort, is among the UAE’s 15 official tracks. The racing season runs from October to March, culminating in a two-day festival that draws enthusiasts from across the Gulf to celebrate this centuries-old tradition.
