Balmaceda Reinterprets Pre-Columbian Forms

Mexican brand Balmaceda previewed Códices collection during Mexico City Art Week, with full launch planned for Milan

Mexican textile design brand Balmaceda opened its showroom in Mexico City during Art Week. The brand showed a preview of its Códices collection from February 4-6, 2026. The preview featured two embroideries and three ceramic vessels. Founder José María Balmaceda designed the collection. He drew inspiration from ancient Mexican architecture and symbols.

The brand will present the full collection at Milan Design Week 2026. Artist Luis Urculo will create a special installation. The rugs will appear for the first time at that event.

The Códices collection takes its name from pre-Columbian codices. It also references pyramids and geometric patterns from Mexican archaeological sites. The works feature images of nopales, serpents, cosmic trees, and architectural forms.

The collection uses different production methods across multiple countries. Artisans weave the rugs in Nepal using Indian and Nepalese textile techniques. The embroidery uses Chikankari technique. The brand produces the ceramics as standalone objects.

Balmaceda

Balmaceda launched in 2017. The studio has shown at ZONA Maco art fair and exhibited in Paris. Three galleries carry its work: The Future Perfect in the United States, Monologue in the United Kingdom, and Freeman Gallery in Australia.

The brand focuses on collectible design rather than mass production. It works with weavers and artisans on manual production. The studio recently expanded into interior and object design beyond textiles.
