Amouage Love Hibiscus: a gourmand obsession

The latest addition to Amouage’s Secret Garden collection pairs the sharp, earthy complexity of hibiscus with the buttery sweetness of salted caramel

Few fragrance houses commit to contrast the way Amouage does. Love Hibiscus, the newest entry in the Omani maison’s Secret Garden collection, is a case in point: a floral-gourmand composition that takes one of the most visually striking flowers in the world and places it in direct tension with the warm, caramelized comfort of a childhood pastry. The result is a fragrance that is simultaneously bold and intimate, vivid and mysterious.

Amouage Love Hibiscus: what does hibiscus actually smell like in a perfume?

Hibiscus is a notoriously difficult ingredient to work with. Many varieties are entirely scentless, and those that do carry a fragrance present a character that resists easy categorization — slightly acidic, faintly earthy, with undertones of red fruit and a quiet sweetness that only fully emerges when the flower is steeped in hot water. It is more complex than it appears, and far less obvious than a rose or a jasmine.

That complexity is precisely what attracted Renaud Salmon, Chief Creative Officer of Amouage, to the ingredient. Surrounded by hibiscus in Oman, where the flower grows in abundance, Salmon wanted a version that made no concessions — one that expressed every facet of the plant, including its more challenging dimensions.

Amouage Love Hibiscus and the gourmand counterpart: salted caramel and the memory of palmiers

To balance the hibiscus, Salmon turned to personal memory. His mother, a cooking teacher, would regularly make puff pastry at home — and part of the dough always became palmiers, the classic European biscuit with its flaky layers and amber-glazed caramelized surface. The contrast with hibiscus is deliberate and sharp: buttery, sweet, and enveloping against acidic, fruited, and herbal.

The connection deepened when Salmon recalled that the word palmiers shares its Latin root with palme — and palm trees are everywhere in Oman. From childhood pastry to Omani hibiscus, via the palm: an unexpected thread that gave the fragrance its emotional coherence.

Amouage Love Hibiscus fragrance notes and composition

To realize the vision, Salmon worked with perfumer Jérome Epinette, known for his ability to hold intense contrasts in balance without flattening either side. The composition moves between the acidic, fruity, and slightly earthy character of hibiscus and the rich, creamy warmth of salted caramel. Passion fruit acts as a bridge between freshness and sweetness, while incense adds a luminous, woody clarity. Sandalwood, cypriol, and vanilla ground the fragrance in depth and sensuality.

The overall effect is a fragrance that feels at once inviting and elusive — an olfactory expression of the interplay between light and shadow.

Amouage Secret Garden collection: five expressions of contemporary femininity

Love Hibiscus joins four existing fragrances in the Secret Garden lineup, each built on the same floral-gourmand architecture: Lilac Love (tonka bean and lilac), Blossom Love (amaretto and cherry blossom), Love Tuberose (Chantilly cream and tuberose), and Love Delight (heliotrope and Middle Eastern honey pastries). Together, the five compositions trace a portrait of contemporary femininity across different registers — romantic, sensual, playful, and free.

Amouage Love Hibiscus bottle and presentation

Love Hibiscus is housed in the Secret Garden bottle introduced in 2024, its ceramic surface finished with a peach-skin texture that is tactile, matte, and quietly luxurious. The chromatic palette balances lightness and mystery in keeping with the fragrance itself.
